MUHARRAM 1445 | BEST MONTH FOR FASTING AFTER RAMADAN

Wednesday 19th July 2023 is the first day of the first month of the Hijrį Calendar, which is known as Muharram. It is one of the four sacred months and contains an immense amount of blessings.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“أفضل الصيام بعد شهر رمضان شهر الله المحرم وأفضل الصلاة بعد الفريضة قيام الليل.”

“The best fasting after the month of Ramadān is the month of Allāh Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night.” [Reported by Muslim, 1163]

So those of us who are able, should take full advantage of these days and try to increase in our voluntary fasting, and generally in our worship too.

In the month of Muharram there is one day in particular which holds great significance, and that is the tenth day.

‘Āshurā – 10th Muharram

On the authority of Abu Qatadah, the Prophet ﷺ said about fasting on the day of ‘Āshurā,

“إني أحتسب على الله أن يكفر السنة التي قبله.”
“Indeed I have hope upon Allāh that it will expiate for the (minor) sins of the previous year.” [Reported by Muslim]

Also in another Hadīth in Muslim,

“لئن بقيت إلى قابل لأصومن التاسع.”

“If I remain alive in the next year, I will fast the 9th (along with the 10th in order to be different from the disbelievers).”

The 9th & 10th of Muharram 1445 will be on Thursday 27th July & Friday 28th July, or you can fast Friday and Saturday if you can’t do the Thursday, so make an effort to fast if you are able to do so & remind others to do the same.

There are three ways of fasting it, according to the scholars:

1) This one is more perfect: fasting the tenth of Muharram, the day before it and the day after it.

2) Fasting the tenth of Muharram and the day before it (or the day after it).

3) Fasting the tenth of Muharram only. Let us not allow these opportunities pass us by without reaping the rewards.

May Allāh ﷻ have mercy on you all.

And Allāh Knows best.
